Shift the Game with Purpose and Belonging

Building a clear sense of common purpose and reinforcing it through storytelling can underpin the success of any significant change programme. In the morning sessions, Jenni Emery, author of "Leading for Organisational Change - Building Purpose, Motivation and Belonging" shares her ideas on the human side of organisational change using her rich personal experience in twenty years of leading change projects in people-centred businesses. Jenni presents a framework for change rooted in seven key themes that help organisations establish their 'BECAUSE': belonging, evolution, confidence, agility, understanding, simplicity and energy. Exploring the role each theme plays in the context of change, Jenni's insights provide real-world examples and advice on building purpose and culture and strengthening motivation through listening, empowering and collaborating.

Then after a break for lunch, Chris Nichols and Philippa Hardman, co-founders of the collaborative strategy hub GameShift, will address how organisations and leaders can harness collective wisdom and energy for creative innovation and effective commitment in times of uncertainty. Philippa and Chris were previously directors of Ashridge Consulting, and are the authors of many articles and book chapters on leading strategic action in turbulent times. Their book, Shift the Game, is due out in Autumn 2019.

They will address critical questions including: how do you know when you are at the edge of your known experience and expertise? What are the psychological traps that can you hook you into stuck patterns when new exploration is calling? When should you use a participative approach to harness collective wisdom? How do you invite people well, and provide a suitable boundary for effective working? How do you develop leaders to be comfortable working in this way – to have authority that reaches beyond the certainty of known answers?
